Dr. Daniel Spagnoli

Dr. Daniel B. Spagnoli completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and Charity Hospital in 1989. In 1991, Dr. Spagnoli became certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a past board examiner. Following residency, he entered private practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, at University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery which eventually became Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery. While practicing in Charlotte, Dr. Spagnoli maintained academic affiliations with Louisiana State University and the University of North Carolina. The Charlotte practice became a training site for OMFS residents, initially from UNC, then from LSU. From 1990-2000, Dr. Spagnoli served as Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Training at Carolinas Medical Center.

In 2012, Dr. Spagnoli became the James Peltier Chairman of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Director of Dental School Hospital Affairs at the LSU Health Science Center, School of Dentistry. During his time as chair, he worked to grow the OMFS department’s academic program and faculty, as well as develop new clinic and hospital relationships for the department.

Dr. Spagnoli is the author of over 30 articles and book chapters. He has served as a section editor of the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal and of AAOMS Knowledge Update. In 2005 and 2006, he co-authored two award-winning papers published in the Journal of Periodontology and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, related to bone grafting and bone morphogenetic protein. Recent articles include “Dental Implants and the Use of rhBMP-2,” coauthored with Dr. Bob Marx, which appeared in the May 2011 issue of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America and was reprinted in Dental Clinics of North America the same year. His chapter, authored together with Dr. Christopher Choi on extraction socket grafting with BMP, was published in the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America in 2013. His recent book on orthognathic surgery, co-edited with Dr. Myron Tucker and Dr. Brian Farrell, was published in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America in 2014. Dr. Spagnoli’s research, numerous lectures and continuing education courses are focused on bone grafting, dental implants, tissue engineering, reconstructive surgery, TMJ joint surgery and pre-prosthetic surgery.
