At Northern Virginia Periodontics our mission is to provide periodontal and dental implant patients the most predictable, minimally invasive, cost-effective treatment solutions. Dr. Garrett Gouldin, Dr. Francisco Carlos, Dr. Vishal Gohel and our entire experienced team are committed to helping each dental implant patient improve their quality of life. Dr. A. Garrett Gouldin

Dr. A. Garrett Gouldin grew up about 15 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, in the small town of Chester. When he was 10 years old, he expressed interest in dentistry to his parents, so his mother took him to the local dentist regularly to observe. From that moment forward, Dr. Gouldin was clear regarding his vocation.

Dr. Gouldin went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1988. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1992. Dr. Gouldin subsequently completed his periodontal certification and master’s degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1995, with the highest honors. (In 1993, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio was ranked the top dental school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.)

Dr. Gouldin’s subject of study for his master’s thesis was periodontal guided tissue regeneration. Dr. Gouldin was the lead author of an article generated from this thesis which was published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology in 1996.

Dr. Gouldin has been practicing periodontics with an emphasis on dental implant techniques in downtown Falls Church since 1995. In November 2000, Dr. Gouldin became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a title which denotes periodontics highest status.

It is Dr. Gouldin’s ongoing goal to stay completely informed on all periodontal and dental implant related procedures and topics of study through continued education.

Dr. Gouldin is qualified to treat patients with a number of periodontal and dental implant needs, and he is certified in the S.M.A.R.T.™ Minimally Invasive Bone Grafting Procedure, the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™), and the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique®.

Dr. Gouldin was recognized in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 in Washingtonian Magazine as one of the top periodontists in the Washington area, as determined by his peers. He was also recognized as a top periodontist in the Virginia Living Magazine (2006, 2009, 2012, 2019, 2020) and the Northern Virginia Magazine (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020). Finally, in the 2016 Washington Consumer’s Checkbook Top Dental Specialist article, Dr. Gouldin received the most mentions among all Northern Virginia, Maryland and D.C. periodontists.

Dr. Gouldin is the co-founder and co-leader of the Northern Virginia Periodontics Synergy Study Series, the Northern Virginia Periodontics NVP Study Club, and the Northern Virginia Periodontics Hygiene Study Series.

As part of the executive board of the Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS), Dr. Gouldin has served as Community Charity Events Chair, Parliamentarian, Secretary/Treasurer, Programs Chair, Vice-President, President (2007-2008), Executive Committee Chair (2008-2009), and he is currently the Ethics Committee Chair for the NVDS, and the state level Ethics Committee Chair for the Virginia Dental Association.

Dr. Gouldin is honored to be a Fellow of both The Virginia Dental Association and The American College of Dentists. The doctor was inducted into the American College of Dentists in 2008 — only 3.5% of dentists in the nation are fellows of the American College of Dentists.

Dr. Gouldin met his wife, Liz, while they were both attending Virginia Tech. They live in Great Falls, Virginia, and have three children, Ashton, Katherine and Jack. On Christmas Day, 2020, Brynn, a female German Shepard, joined the Gouldin family.

Dr. Gouldin enjoys family time, regular exercise, golfing and snow skiing, as well as spiritual/church activities. An avocation of Dr. Gouldin’s is all aspects of psychology, especially the field of Positive Psychology.

Dr. Francisco T. Carlos

Dr. Francisco T. Carlos grew up in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2003, he achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He obtained his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut in 2007. He subsequently completed his periodontal certification and master’s degree at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 2010. Dr. Carlos’ subject of study for his master’s thesis was gingival esthetics.

Upon completing his periodontal training, Dr. Carlos joined the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer, where he treated our active-duty military members and taught periodontics to the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents. Dr. Carlos completed his active-duty commitment in September of 2013. He separated as a Major, with awards such as the Dental Squadron Company Grade Officer of the Year. Dr. Carlos has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since May 11, 2012.

Dr. Carlos is certified in the Wilckodontics® (Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics™) Procedure, Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™), the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique®, and the S.M.A.R.T.™ Minimally Invasive Bone Grafting Method. In addition, he is a Fellow in the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry and is a co-founder and co-leader of the Northern Virginia Periodontics Synergy Study Series, the Northern Virginia Periodontics NVP Study Club, and the Northern Virginia Periodontics Hygiene Study Series.

Dr. Carlos was selected as a 2016 Top Dental Specialist by the Washington Consumers’ Checkbook. He was nominated by his peers as a Top Periodontist in Virginia Living Magazine in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, as well as Top Dentist by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Dr. Carlos was also selected as a 2019 and 2021 Washingtonian Top Dentist.

In his time away from work, Dr. Carlos enjoys golf, traveling, sporting events, exercising, and coaching his daughters’ various sports teams. He is married to his wife, Melany, whom he met while at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. They have two beautiful daughters, Lily and Fera.

Dr. Vishal Gohel

Dr. Vishal Gohel was born and raised in Danbury, Connecticut. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in physiology and neurobiology at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT in 2012.

During his college years, Dr. Gohel first became exposed to the dental field after breaking a front tooth during a sporting accident. Following a great experience having it treated, he sought out opportunities to observe local dental practitioners to learn more about clinical practice, and his developing interest led him to apply to dental school. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from Boston University in 2017. Dr. Gohel graduated in the top 10% of his class with the highest honors.

In dental school, Dr. Gohel became passionate about the field of periodontology. He went on to complete his specialty training in periodontics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill. At UNC, he also earned his Master of Science degree, conducting cutting-edge animal research which focused on the healing patterns of novel bone grafting biomaterials. In 2021, Dr. Gohel became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, certifying the highest designation in the field of periodontics. Dr. Gohel’s special areas of interest include bone regeneration, soft tissue grafting, anterior esthetic dental implants, and minimally invasive approaches to surgery.

Dr. Gohel strives to remain at the forefront of clinical advances in the field with ongoing continuing education and maintains involvement with numerous professional organizations including the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, International Team for Implantology, Academy of Osseointegration, and the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Gohel is also engaged locally with involvement in the Northern Virginia Dental Society and NVP Study Club. It is his goal to provide comprehensive, quality periodontal and dental implant care in a gentle, comfortable environment.

Outside of practice, Dr. Gohel enjoys reading, fitness, sports, spending time with family, and exploring local shops and restaurants in the DMV.
